Inspiration for Digipak

Here i have included some images which have inspired the artwork for my digipak. Because our chosen music genre is rap, I decided to look at a lot of CDs which I own and online digipack's to get a better idea of what I want my digipack to look like.

At the very beginning of the project our first shoot which included children playing basketball already hinted some ideas about what I would possibly be doing for my digipack. In our shoot we intentionally included a long board covered with graffiti which was already in the youth club. 

Above are three different CD covers which I looked at and which gave me an idea for my cover. All these three share bold, big fonts as well as graffiti font on the second cover. To keep in with the chosen genre I decided to explore and show the hip hop culture and not do the standard thing which is to create a cover with the artist on it. I really like graffiti and portray it as a piece of art therefore I decided to explore this aspect of the hip hop culture and include it in my digipack.

When we went out to shoot for the end of our clip I created the graffiti which added a special effect to the video. The place where we filmed this scene had a lot of other professional works of other people we do not know. I took some photographs to show these (above). Seeing this graffiti really inspired me to explore more. I decided to experiment with light at night and used my camera and mover it really quickly to achieve a smudging effect. I did this because I also wanted to include the surroundings in which these children would have been brought up. Usually the perception of rappers is negative due to where they come from or what they have been through. I want to show this but the fact that these people release albums proves they're artists. 

This photo I have found online. I really liked it and it also gave me an idea for my digipack. I tought that if I was going to keep to the standard ways the CDs are released with the main artist on the cover, I tought I'd use this effect. This effect is widely used in rap videos and I thought it was an idea to work with and whilst working on my digipack I did explore this idea and here it is...

My 6 panel digipak

This is what I have decided for the cover for my album to be. I decided to escape the idea of introducing the main artist on the cover of my album because I think it's boring and monotonous. I intended to keep the strong links with the hip hop culture therefore I took a shot of four spray cans in front of graffiti which was already made. I used dafont and looked through appropriate fonts which would look good on the cover which would also fit in with the genre and I decided to use a 'magik marker' font. I have created this in two colours and layered these on top of each other to achieve the desired effect.

Here are a couple of shots which I took of Matt using a camera. These photographs were meant to complete my digipack. I thought I want him to be on the cover on my music album but after thinking about this I ended up changing the idea to not including Matt, who performed as 'Chiddy' in the music video, in my digipack.
This is due to the fact that I don't want my digipack to look like another hip hop album therefore I decided to explore the idea of hip hop as a culture and I wanted my album to revolve around that.

Marketing an artist

When marketing an artist a really good idea is also to produce stickers. A record label in Poland, 'PROSTO' has done this to promote themselves as a label. They also do this for their artists. If I was to further market for chiddy bang I would definitely do this and add stickers for chiddy bang to CD'S for free..

8 Panel Digipack

I thought that I could include this in my research. This album is from a polish rapper called, SLON. It demonstrates very interesting visual design techniques. I like it because of the cut out scissors in the middle of a box which holds the digipack. This is interesting visually and I would definitely like to do this with my digipack but I wouldn't decide on it unless it had a very specific and good idea behind it. 

Jewel Case

Above I have presented couple shots of recently released rap album in Poland. It's all done in monochrome and for a CD album it's unique and unusual. It's all black and white and fits with the title and the idea of the album which once translated mean 'black white magic'. I really like this digipack, to me it looks as if it's made to create illusions which is what black magic is meant to do.
The thing i like the most from this jewel case is the fact that the artists aren't on the cover of the album. They have however included their eyes in the front which is really effective and looks really good with the lines which go  in different directions.

First Day of Filming

Yesterday, on the 21st of January, me and Theo went down to the estate in Roehampton and started the first day of filming.

Our original plan was to film his brother play football with his team but he didn't want to go, so we weren't going to force him as he is only little. Also because these kids are very young we wouldn't have permission to film them all together.

As this didn't work out for us, we first went down to the bottom of Theo's block in order to see how it would be when we would be filming between these columns. We found that it was too dark and so we moved to the next block.

As you can see in the pictures below everything was clearer due to the fact that there was more light, but we would still benefit with some more lights. (Eg Matt's car)

After that we went down to the youth club and filmed young kids play basketball. We were lucky and three of the older boys said they would help us as well. Below are the some pictures showing us filming the older guys.

When we filmed the younger boys it wan't so easy. Me and Theo decided we have to get the boys to play in a certain area so that when the camera isn't hand held, it can capture everything that's happening. So I got the boys together and showed them lines on the basketball court and told them where they can go and which lines they shouldn't cross whilst playing. This was quite easy at first but with time, seeing as they were only kids, they got carried away and forgot about our rule. We let them carry on because we wanted to capture the moments when they are fighting over the ball and when they are running around being themselves.

After that we decided we were going to have a little bit of structure to the whole thing. We asked the older boys to play in front of the wide graffiti board because it gave us a nice shot.

Overall, we found the day fun. It showed us what we have to expect from the weather, time of day and locations.
